JatroSolutions & GEA optimise the detoxification process of Jatropha to obtain Jatropha kernel meal (JKM) with high protein content and low-enough phorbol esters (PEs) content and anti-nutritive compounds (like trypsin inhibitors) to be considered harmless and assess it economically. The anti-nutritive compounds are reduced by wet heating (hydro-thermal process), phorbol esters have to be reduced by solvent extraction (with ethanol or methanol). Dried slurry of the aqueous extraction process was detoxified with two Ethanol extractions. After the extraction the detoxification. JKM was dried in a fluid bed dryer. PE content could be reduced below 0.03 mg/g and protein content of JKM was between 45-50%.

The method enables production of toxin and antinutritional factors free and highly nutritious (even higher protein content as soybean meal) Jatropha products: seed cake, kernel meal and protein isolate. These Jatropha products are destined for use as a protein supplement in feeds for fish, shrimp, aquaculture, pig, poultry, turkey, cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats or other domestic livestock species.
